MOSAIC
~ as a child I grew up with my mother's mosaics throughout the house. My older cuz is very talented at it. With my 30 years as a textile artist, using colors and textures has the ultimate desired effect for me. After cobbling together shell pieces and sea glass with beads this simple island scene has a new life as the light shines through it. The scrap frame I brought back from Honolulu makes the perfect presentaion. It now hangs in the kitchen window and delightfully changes with the days light....
~Shards in mosaic
Above is the first attempt in glass of a Bird of Paradise flower using shards of cut stained glass layered on top of each other.... Beautiful colors but lethal to touch! This led me to grinding the edges and then fitting the pieces and next I expanded to glass on glass mosaics without any grouting, intended to hang in the window with the light behind. I also started classic grouted mosaics that are one layer made of the same stained glass and ground and fitted in their design.......
Below~ Another shard mosaic was an experiment and a good save, doing every possible thing wrong but learning! It now hangs outside on the blue shed to greet folks coming into the drive. A great feng shui Blue Headed Bohlander frog he is a protector and a happy greeter. I recently gave this to friend Deb Rowden.
GLASS MOSAIC~
Art glass layered 'painting' good luck Yin Yang Mandala
~above with light source behind
~above light source in front
~this yin yang koi Mandala was created by cutting glass, grinding the edges then layering them onto the surface of plexi glass. This design was layed out only by size and center point. Otherwise I created it as I work. The mandala design is a cool white yin fish in deep cool water and then the warm golden yang fish in warm waters. Lucky bamboo and a pink lily flower are the grounded earth and for luck. Agates are used as rocks under the waters. There is a prisim for the focus in the center. There are up to five layers all fitted and stacked and balanced. With viewing the light source behind the glass it appears simple and the layers are not very prominent. With viewing the light source only in the front the the layers become more evident and the patina and textures of the glass are very striking.
This is a learning test art piece in preparation for a commission coming up. I learned not to mix plexi glass with glass, it is like oil and water. I now work with tempered glass as the base support for the window glass mosaics.

Austra's Orchids~
Cut stained glass, ground and fitted and mounted onto cement backing board and grouted in pink. This inspiration happened the day that my grand daughter Austra Anna was born. I was stuck on finding a design and suddenly thought of orchids. On the computer I pulled up a variety of my photos to sift through and decided on one, all while awaiting the birth of our girl that morning. When the call finally came and her name was revealed I learned she was the namesake for both the Great Grandmothers by using their middle names.
Austra is Latvian for 'goddess of the dawn and light who acts as a messenger of the sun' and her great grandmother tended orchids in Latvia. So I immediatly started this mosaic and I used the orange background fanning out as the sunrise. This is my birth gift to her.

Dalmatian Gracie is my liver dalmatian companion dog for my disability. The idea was to do a portrait showing a light source. Using a coveted glass sheet for the corner, it set the tone for the colors and mood of a rain wet grasses.

~ most of the glass for this piece was given to me by a neighbor down the road. I had purchased some glass and supplies from her last summer as she was moving and closing out her lamp work. She contacted me and brought by some glass she found and wanted to give it to me. I actually hadn't done any glass for 6 months and I had a photo that I had taken in Hawai'i in 2010 of a Bird of Paradise. That night I was so inspired by the box of edge cuttings and scrap pieces of juicy glass selections that I began this design immediatly. It flew together, although my new grinder broke down, so I pulled out the old one with almost no teeth left to grind with, haha. The frame I brought with me from my O'ahu home and had actually planned to do a seashell mosaic landscape on the cement board I already had cut to fit for it. Sometimes it is nice to go with the flow~~
