~ 100% INK ~
~ Definitely color is one of my talents! I have always been very tuned into colors and loved to overlap and blend dyes when working in textiles and now paintings. But I feel that simple ink is my specialty. I grew up drawing and in High School I was relentlessly sketching with my rapidiograph pens. My art buddy friend Marty Olson and I would be snugged in a corner scratching away our linear patterns and we were complete geeks about our pens! It was in Hawai'i that I started to do tiny inks again and then gave them away to strangers at the beach or even traveling on planes....finally I kept one.

This is a childs Mandala representing the ride of life. Moves in a counter clockwise motion with nine lucky fish, one serpent to represent the drama and two frogs as protectors. Balance of rough and calm waters. Note that scale is not important as through a childs eye. The center to focus on is the flower next to the Pearl Girl.

Spalted mango wood, arch back, spruce top hand inked tenor ukulele!
I purchased a kit from Germany to ink a design on, it shipped from China and I opened it and thought ' what was I thinking...?" as I had no idea how to put it together. I put it away being very ill at the time with acute radon poisoning. Later this spring 2016 I took it out and did the ink design I had planned--with very much thinking going on--and then Paul and I decided it was good enough to take to Steve Mason a local luthier of Kaw Valley Guitars. So now I have her and she sings real sweet, very bright. I had lost my singing voice with the radon and had totally quit playing. Now I am busy getting my fingers back in shape and relearning.....sadly no singing though which goes so well with da 'uke.
I wish that I had the photos posted onto instagram by Kyle at Kaw Valley Guitars. As he worked on my ukulele he posted progress stages. I loved seeing them as I waited for my ukulele to be ready. ~~ In the beginning, I chose to ink -NOT- paint as ink does not dampen the tone of the wood. And I also wanted the wood grain to show through the ink; to blend the two together. I chose mango wood with a spruce top as I knew the sound would be bright. And I knew I wanted the design to have a koi fish and chose to have it swimming up as the uke faced the 'audience'. I practiced inking on a scrap piece of guitar front spruce wood to get the feel of the grain and also the ink bleeds into the grain causing a feathery line. And I learned that an outline first onto the wood helped control that bleeding of the ink. It took a lot of guts to draw the first pencil line outlines of my design. And the ukulele is demensional so not a flat surface like a sheet of paper. Then came the unforgiving ink--- no mistakes allowed! I had been told to wet the head stock to know what color the spalting markings would be when the uke was finished with the sealer. It was a deep dark brown. So to match that and be consistent in color I used a brown ink in all the outline. Then I used a lighter reddish brown ink for the details in the koi fish. The blues and greens for the water I kept transparent and simple. I knew where the bridge would be mounted so was able to plan for any adjustments in the design. Also the fret board would come down over the face so I was able to have a testing area that would later be covered over by the fret board. Once I decided on a white fish color, I also had to decide what type of markings that I wanted. I selected a red style of patterns I had seen on a fish in Hawai'i. And I inked them blotchy as that is how koi fish markings are. In my mind I kept thinking " keep it simple" and for me that is hard to do! There isn't alot of room on the front of a ukulele, haha, so I filled the space and created flowing lines that would be energetic I hope.
